Glenkinchie is another one that is part of the Diageo portfolio and is one of only a few lowland distilleries in operation that are producing single malts for the mass market. The 12 year old and the distillers edition are the only bottlings they release on a regular basis. Because there are not many lowland whiskies around and I had not tried any before I tried this one I was not sure what to expect. I don’t always agree with regional flavour profiles because I have come across quite a few exceptions to the rule and distilleries are being adventurous in terms of what they are producing (such as peated speysiders). The consistent theme that I have noticed from what I have read is that lowland whiskies are light and delicate.
Whisky: Glenkinchie 12 Year Old Single Malt, 43%
Nose: Creamy, malty, biscuits, lemon custard, light honeycomb, metallic, faint grass, hint of vanilla
Taste: Sherbert fizz, soda, citrus rind, honey, vegetal note, hint of oak
Finish: Short, sour citrus and oak
Summary: This is most definitely a light and delicate whisky. I am glad that this one comes in at 43% because at 40% I would think I would struggle to pick many notes up. There is a nice maltiness to this with citrus undertones but there is also a green/vegatal and metallic note that pops up which i am not so keen on. I tend to find these notes in Irish whiskies and normally find that a bit of time and oxidisation tempers this down. Water doesn’t do this single malt any favours I think. I was expecting more floral and fruit to this but instead the overall experience was more astringent and light. This makes for a nice summer single malt but apart from that I did not find it to be memorable.

2 – tastes fine but does not excite me
3 – more to my liking and would revisit occasionally
4 – very much to my liking and would consider as a regular feature on my whisky shelf
